The first setting in the book Number the Stars is Denmark, Copenhagen. This story takes place in the 40's to be exact 1943 in the middle of World War II.

The second setting in Number the Stars is Uncle Hendrik's cottage, which is in Gilleje, Denmark. This cottage used to be a farm where cops were grown but now Uncle Hendrik only keeps a cow named Blossom. Right across the boarder from Gilleje is Sweden. Sweden is a free country from the Nazi's. They went there because they were going to sail the Jews over to Sweden to safety.
Charicters
Annemarie-Annemarie is a 10 year old Dane girl that lives in Copenhagen. Annemarie is very brave, kind, and thoughtful. Annemarie risks her life to help the Jews in the middle of WWII.
Kirsti- Kirsti is the 5 year old sister of Annamarie. Kirsti is a silly, light hearted girl, that cannot stop talking. Kirsti is also loving and caring.
Mama- Mama is the mother of Kirsti and Annemarie. Mama is extremely brave. Mama led one of the journeys to the boat dock to send the Jews to safety in Sweden.
Ellen- Ellen is a 10 year old Jewish girl living in the time of WWII. This time is very dangerous to be Jewish. Ellen is Annemarie's best friend. Ellen goes to Uncle Hendrik's cottage with the Johansen's so they can sail her over to Sweden to safety. Ellen's parents also join her at the cottage to be sailed across to Sweden to safety.
Uncle Hendrik- Uncle Hendrik is Mama'a brother. Uncle Hendrik is a fisherman, he also takes Jews across to Sweden so they are not relocated. Uncle Hendrik risks his life to save the Jews, he is a very kind, brave, and understanding person.
The Nazi's- The Nazi's are German solders. They are relocating all the Jews and killing them. They are the enimies in this book. But, the Nazi's lose the war and they lose all of their power over the countries.

Chapter 1
Chapter one is when Ellen and Annemarie are racing to the corner of there street and some Nazi soldiers stop them because they were running. The girls were very nervous because the soldiers were questioning them and being nasty to them. Also when the girls got home the little girl named Kirsti told the parents about it and they got in trouble.
Chapter 2
The second chapter is about Annemarie telling Kirsti a story about King Christian and how he would go out on his horse every morning and he would greet all the people in the village. And how sometimes Annemarie would go with her big sister Lise to see the King and they would wave to him and sometimes he would wave to them. But then because of Lises death they couldn't go any more.
Chapter 3
Kirsti had a broken button on her jacket and they had to go to the button store after school. So after school they went and the store had closed so they went home with no button. When they got home they told there mother and she got very worried. So Peter cam to there house in the middle of the night. He told them that it was not good sign because there next-door-nabob were jewish. The Rosens are in trouble!
Chapter 4
The Rosens are afraid and they have to hide Ellen in the Johansens apartment. and Ellen is hoping that she will see her parents again. Her parents are in hiding so that the Nazis don't bring them to the camps. And Ellen has to pretend that she and Annemarie are sisters so that she doesn't get shipped to the camp.
Chapter 5
This chapter was about when Ellen and the Johansens didn't think that the Nazis would come search there house. But they did and when they came the girls were very scared because Ellen cant get the star of david off her neckless. But finally they get it off. Then the Nazis call them out and questioned them.
Chapter 6
This chapter is about the Johanses deciding if they are going to see there uncle to get away from the Nazis. So they decide that they are going to go. They are taking the train. They get on the train and some Nazi soldiers start questioning them. And they asked if they were going for the new year. And Kristi tells them that it is Ellen's new year but they just chuckled.
Chapter 7
This chapter is about how the Johanses are settling in to there new home. Annemarie and Ellen go running off in the field. A little gray kitten fallows them wile they are playing on the rocks. But there mother calls them because she doesn't want any one to hurt them.
Chapter 8
This chapter is when Annemarie and Ellen go into the field to pick flowers to put on the table in the house for the funaral. When the family is talking the girls find out that they are having a funeral in the house for there great aunt Birte. But Annemarie has never herd of her.
Chapter 9
This chapter is about Annemarie going out the kitchen widow to talk to her uncle. When she gets over there she tells her uncle that she thinks him and her mama are lying about aunt Birte. She thinks it is someone else in the casket. And her uncle admits they where lying. And when the funeral starts she gets even more curious with time.
CHAPTER 10
This chapter is about some solderers coming to the house and asking about the casket and if they can open it. So Mrs. Johanses says the doctor said that there is a sickness in the dead persons body and that they are probably just crazy or something and that it would be nice to see her again. But the soldiers disagree so one of them slaps her face.
Chapter 11
This chapter is when they open the casket. When they open it there are clothes and blankets in it and every one in gets something. Mrs. Johanses gives every one a coat even the baby. There is nothing her size so Mrs.Johanses gives one of Kristi sweater to her. Then they all head to the boat.

This chapter is when Annmarie dosent know where her mother is and she is very worried. She was so posed to be home at 3:30 but she still isn't home at 4:30. So Annmarie goes looking in the bedrooms and when she gets to Kristis room she sees an blear in the entrains of the path. So she ran out there and helped her mother up.
Chapter 13
This chapter is when Annmaries mom thinks she broke her ancle form falling of a tree stump. And when they are going inside and they see the package that Mr. Rusen dropped and her mom tells her to run as fast as she can to the boat before they take off. So she runs into the forest. She dosent Know how she would see so she is going to be very cautious.
Chapter 14
This chapter is about Annmarie going throw the forest and how she thinks that picturing herself as little red riding hood so that she sent to scared. She also has her telling Kristi the story about little red riding hood and she put throw her mid all the questioned that she would ask.
Chapter 15
This chapter is when Annmarie is running throw the forest and she runs into some solgiers they start rummaging throw the basket. Finally they find a package. They opened it and asked what it was. She just asked like a silly little girl and said she didn't know. So when they let her go she brought it to the boat and gave it to her uncle.
Chapter 16
This chapter is about Annmarie going to help her uncle with milking Blossom there cow. And how Annmarie starting to ask questions about the package and the handkerchief in it. He said that he would tell her a little about it. So he said that there was a chemical in it and that it attracted the dog but then if it sniff it too much then it would take that the dogs smell away.

This chapter the ending capture is about Annmarie and her family out on there balcony again and watching the parred. Because the wore had ended. And how she started thinking about Ellen and how she hasn't come back yet. Then she remembers when the solders cam looking for The Rossens in there apartment and where she hid her nacelles. So then she went to get it- it turns out that it was in her sisters trunk.
Afterword
